Letter from the Senior Principal to Parents and Students on the occasion of school year 2020 – 2021

September 3, 2020

Dear Greenfield School Families,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am delighted to welcome you all back to another school year. It is truly my honor to be leading the students and staff of Greenfield School. I am privileged to work with such an outstanding body of staff to make it a smooth transition for our students during these uncertain times.

Born in Ireland, a country divided north and south, the opportunities for some members of the community were greatly restricted. The best plan for a secure future was to obtain a good education. Of course, as a child and a young man, I did not fully understand this, but ever since entering university, I have been forever grateful to my parents, particularly my mother, for making sure I did my schoolwork.

This appreciation for the work of parents and the sacrifices they make for their children, has stayed with me throughout my working life. My career in education began in England, where I first became a Head teacher, and later I took charge of schools in France, China, Vietnam and Myanmar. In all the schools where I have worked, I think about the parents and what they are trying to offer their children. Just like me, when I was a child, the children we work with do not always fully appreciate the importance of their education because they cannot imagine their life as it will become when they have left school and try to enter the world of work.

It is the duty of Head Teachers, teachers and all the staff in a school, to think of these children as their own and to give them the same care and attention as they would their own children. The culture and climate we create in our school should be one that helps nurture the future adult and offers them a maximum number of possibilities in the years to come.

We are proud of our beautiful school and have high expectations for each and every student.  Our students are enthusiastic, driven, and inquisitive.  Together with our dedicated staff, we strive to foster these qualities and aim to nurture our students to become the best versions of themselves, where they prioritize compassion and respect for others as contributing members of society, a high standard of academic understanding and output, and a passion for life-long learning. Whether we are learning in person or remotely at home, our goal is to encourage active student engagement where all students are given a fair and equal opportunity to achieve their learning goals.

We have been working hard all summer to plan for a safe opening of school and to implement the best practices to mitigate the risks associated with Covid-19. Our classrooms have been modified to increase social distancing, regular sanitization is taking place throughout the school, handwashing and mask-wearing will be consistently encouraged, and our schedule has been modified to allow for increased social distancing while still maintaining a high standard of education for every student.

Partnering with families will be crucial this year as we face many obstacles due to the global pandemic.  We appreciate your support as you work with students at home to practice safety protocols such as wearing a mask and washing hands. We encourage families to stay connected and informed by following our district website for important updates and information regarding our upcoming plans.

I very much look forward to meeting and getting to know the parents of our Greenfield community as we help the school grow and flourish in the years to come. Working together, we can help provide the best possible educational experiences for the children in our care and help them become the best they can be.

Yours sincerely,

Brendan O’Flaherty
